According to the Times Higher Education 2007, he is the most widely cited sociologist alive and is noted especially for his theory of structuration. Lord Giddens is the author of over 34 books and 200 articles including his most recent book The politics of climate change and his textbook Sociology which has sold over a million copies. Albeit his academic work, he also co-founded the publishing house Polity Press in 1984.

Having been Director of the LSE from 1997 to 2003, Lord Giddens was made a member of the House of Lords in 2004 and has honorary degrees and awards from 21 universities.
